It makes the consequences of your vote predictable. If you elect a party member, you can be assured that they will vote within the party line, or else they will suffer pretty catastrophic political penalties from their caucus (demotion from Cabinet positions, rescinding committee appointments, or even getting kicked out of the party caucus altogether).
Without being held to account by a party caucus, an independent can essentially exercise their own political will once elected to office. They are elected representatives, and therefore are responsible for exercising the will of their constituents and not themselves. Political parties offer accountability this way.
Political parties allow for expedient and cooperative government (imagine trying to reach a consensus among a Congress of 500+ ideologically independent members). Being held under a common banner allows for policy to be agreed upon in a timely and constructive manner.
It gives rise to grassroots political participation—the bedrock of the democratic system. When the citizen involves themselves in a political party at the local level by attending conventions, AGMs, and so forth, they vote on policy platforms that are then used to influence state-level and federal-level party policy.
