BENGALURU: There were at least 28 cases of firecracker-related injuries, ranging from minor burns to potentially permanent eye injuries, during Diwali celebrations. In one of the more serious cases, a 10-year-old boy was admitted to Sankara Eye Hospital on Friday night, with cracker pieces stuck in his eye. He was standing near the car park watching neighbours burst crackers when a small red one flew into his eyes. One operation and several scans were done on Saturday. The results will determine whether more surgeries are needed. Doctors are yet to disclose any long-term impact on the boy's vision.
“Diwali is a festival of lights, not of crackers,“ said the boy's mother who didn't wish to be named. “I don't want this to happen to any other child. Crackers are very risky, affecting bystanders the most, and should be banned,“ she added.
Minto Eye Hospital saw four cracker-related injuries; three of those were children, one as young as 3. All were minor cases, with patients receiving out-patient care.
