In short Arduino is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects. Arduino consists of both a physical programmable circuit board (often referred to as a micro controller) and a piece of software, or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that runs on your computer, used to write and upload computer code to the physical board.

If you are good enough i mean a geeky type then you can use this for updating your twitter feed when your garden is in short of water.

Once you have done with Arduino then raspberry pi will be a good start for you. Using this you can learn embedding computing in very easy manner.
After that you can use other fruits such as banana pi
So lets come back to your question for easy tutorial arduino official web site could be a good start.

And for more clear understanding you can go for video tutorials which goes here in at this you tube channel.
