username and email address

Git wants every commit associated with a username and an email address. This enables all source code contributors in a distributed environment to easily identify and communicate with co-contributors.

You can set up the user.name and user.email properties with the git config command, as demonstrated below:

/c/ git quiz (tutorial)
$ git config --local user.name "Git quiz taker"
 /c/ git quiz (tutorial)
$ git config --local user.email "me@example.com"

If the user.name and user.email address properties are not explicitly set, Git will use the IP address of the local machine and the OS' logon credentials in order to provide the required information to a commit. It will also generate a fairly verbose warning message about configuring these properties properly.
