Lets see what is concurrency first.
we all know a good programming language should be able to manage multiple processes at single time literally there are two ways to achieve the same one is concurrency and another one is parallelism. 
The following diagram shows what is parallelism and what is concurrency. 

Now we know that nodejs is single threaded so that we could use less CPU to achieve complicated tasks. 
So in a single threaded mechanism nodejs needs to do concurrent operation rather than that of parellel operation. Javascript uses call backs heavily to achieve concurrency. But if we uses call backs too much in nodejs that will leads to call back hell.
To avoid such situation we have to use promises, or async await to make the code looks cleaner and better.
