GATE-Civil-Engg-2018-->View question

Using limit state method and neglecting the self weight of base plate and steel column, the length of a side of the base plate to be provided is (GATE-CIVIL-Engg-2018)

A steel column of ISHB 350 @72.4 kg/m is subjected to a factored axial compressive load
of 2000 kN. The load is transferred to a concrete pedestal of grade M20 through a square
base plate. Consider bearing strength of concrete as 0.45fck, where fck is the characteristic
strength of concrete. Using limit state method and neglecting the self weight of base plate
and steel column, the length of a side of the base plate to be provided is
(A) 39 cm (B) 42 cm (C) 45 cm (D) 48 cm

Ans. (D)
Sol. Given : Factored axial compressive load ,  P =   2000kN
Grade of concrete pedestal  = M 20
For M 20 grade concrete, Fck  =  20N/mm2
Bearing capacity of concrete =  0.45 Fck
To find : Length of side of the base plate =?
Area of square base plate = Factored load 2000  103 2000*103
                                        Bearing capacity of concrete      0.45Fck         0.45 *20
Area of square base plate  =  222222.22 mm2
Side of square base plate = (Area of square base plate)1/2
                                                           =    ( 222222.22 )1/2
                                                            =    471.40 mm  = 471.40 101
                                                            =      47.14cm
Hence, length side of base plate 48cm .
