Theoretically Net irrigation requirement for any period is estimated by subtracting from consumptive use the amount of moisture contributed by such natural sources as:
(i) Effective rainfall
(ii) carry over soil moisture, and
(iii) Groundwater.
The later two are, however difficult to estimate. Also, their contribution is not generally significant and these are not dealt with here. Once the net irrigation requirement is calculated the efficiency of irrigation at various point is calculated to find out total irrigation water requirement at say outlet, head works storage reservoir, etc.
